Give Miss Leopard Prince a break. Haven't we met scores of beauty contestants (especially those churned out by ERM International) with similar levels of sub-standard intelligence and eloquence? I have. If only the media kept a watchful eye on the 'quality' of 'beauty queens' churned out year after year, we would all have endless stories to laugh about. But we also know that this is not the case. Singapore beauty pageants are no longer as well-publicized, and even if they do come under the spotlight, they are heavily criticised.
Perhaps then, this calls for a need to problematise the notion of beauty pageants in Singapore. Glamour parades can no longer come in the guise of a pageant - herein lies a quandary of discourse. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet? I beg to disagree! A pageant by another name such as Female 50 Gorgeous People, SingTel Grid Girls, Cleo Cover Girl Search or the likes would smell a lot sweeter.
A lesson learnt in branding: Associate yourself with the right event titles.
